Better ways to address hate, prejudice and discrimination in Maryland - pyd.islamicleadership.org

Following my resignation from the Maryland State Hate Crime Prevention Commission, my focus will be on addressing the alarming rise in hate crimes targeting marginalized youth across the state, particularly Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian youth. These young people have faced an exponential increase in hate since the genocide on Palestine began last year - as reported by Council on Islamic American Relations (CAIR), compounding the already high levels of discrimination they endure.

By collaborating with community leaders and organizations, I will work to create safe spaces and support networks where these youth can thrive, empowering them to overcome the challenges posed by discrimination and hate.

A key component of this initiative will be led by the Islamic Leadership Institute of America (ILIA), which has made addressing hate crimes a top priority on its 2024 and 2025 roadmap. ILIA’s Positive Youth Development (PYD) research team is already hard at work developing resources for parents, educators, and youth on how to effectively handle bullying, strengthen their identities, and rise above the challenges posed by discrimination. These efforts will ensure that young people, especially those from marginalized communities, have the tools and support they need to navigate an increasingly hostile environment.

We invite nonprofits, educators, and media outlets interested in supporting this initiative to join us in this critical work. To get involved, please complete this form

Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient community where every young person feels safe, valued, and empowered. For more information on the resources and programs we are developing, please visit pyd.islamicleadership.org.

Enough is enough. Join the IMAN Network to address the alarming targeting and harassment of respected Muslim community leaders following their nomination to this Commission.
